Our team is part of Amazon’s Personalization organization, a high-performing group that leverages Amazon’s expertise in machine learning, big data, distributed systems, and user experience design to deliver the best shopping experiences for our customers. We are building ML solutions to rank content on new shopping experiences on Amazon that inspire customers to find engaging multi-modal content (videos, images, reviews) related to their interests. As a Senior Applied Scientist in our team, you will be working on cutting edge ways to help customers find the right products and content on their shopping journey. You will lead the development of novel algorithms in areas such as deep learning and reinforcement learning while building scalable industrial systems. As a member of a team of talented engineers and ML scientists, you will have a unique opportunity to help design and build infrastructure that accesses terabytes of data to produce and deliver models with low latency and high reliability. Key job responsibilities

  • Adopt or invent new machine learning techniques in the realm of real-world ranking, recommendation and large language models.

  • Define and drive the team's science vision to provide step-change improvements to customer & business problems.

  • Be technically fearless and with a passion for building scalable science and engineering solutions.

  • Serve as a key scientific resource in full-cycle development (conception, design, implementation, testing to documentation, delivery, and maintenance).

  • Participate in organizational planning, hiring, mentorship and leadership development.

  • Publish results at peer-reviewed conferences/journals.

Irvine, CA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD, or Master's degree and 6+ years of applied research experience

  • 3+ years of building machine learning models for business application experience

  • Experience with neural deep learning methods and machine learning

  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field

  • 5+ years of building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application experience

  • Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project.

  • Handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.

  • A strong sense of curiosity and willingness to learn quickly, building knowledge and skills that this role requires.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $260,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
