Responsibilities

A Senior Cancer Registry Technician is responsible for managing and maintaining cancer patient data within a healthcare facility's cancer registry system. Their primary duties include collecting, analyzing, and abstracting patient information from medical records, pathology reports, and other sources to ensure accurate and comprehensive documentation of cancer cases. They also assist in coding diagnoses and treatments according to established standards such as ICD-O (International Classification of Diseases for Oncology) and SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) coding systems.

Senior Cancer Registry Technicians may also supervise and train junior staff members, participate in quality assurance activities to ensure data accuracy and integrity, and collaborate with healthcare providers, researchers, and public health officials to facilitate cancer research and surveillance efforts. They play a crucial role in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, such as those set forth by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC), and contribute to improving cancer care outcomes by providing valuable data for research, treatment planning, and public health initiatives.

As a regional cancer registrar for Dignity Health facilities in Arizona, the incumbent maintains cancer registry components in accordance with state law as detailed in the Arizona State Cancer Incidence Act and the cancer abstracting guidelines by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Commission on Cancer Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS).

  • Abstracts patient records in accordance with ACoS, Arizona State Registry and hospital cancer committee requirements..

  • Knowledgeable of all ACoS and ACR requirements and keeps current on changes in program and reporting

  • requirements.

  • Knowledgeable of the cancer disease processes (benign and malignant), diagnostic methods and procedures and

  • treatment methods.

  • Follows the abstracting guidelines of ACoS to abstract within six months of diagnosis.

  • Follows the productivity guidelines of the registry office abstracting a case in 45 minutes (average).

  • Works with Manager on training process for Trainee position.

  • Understands that quality control of abstracting is top priority.

  • Communicates with physicians and/or their office staff either by letter or phone to complete case treatment information.

You must be Certified as a Tumor Registrar (CT CTR) to qualify for this position

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Three years recent experience in a cancer registry.

  • Experience in multi-EMR applications and ability to capture needed information from all sources.

  • Course work in and/or two years experience using anatomy and physiology and medical terminology, cancer disease process and cancer treatment methods.

  • Ability/knowledge to multi-task through all cancer registry functions with little supervision.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability/knowledge to multi-task through all cancer registry functions with little supervision.

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Registry Software System

  • Must understand the case finding/follow-up process.

  • Must be fully trained in the use of FORDS Abstracting Manual (Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards) Seer Staging, MHP rules and Hematopoietic Rules and knowledge of all ACoS requirements.

  • Certified as a Tumor Registrar (CTR).

Preferred:

  • Experience in an accredited ACoS facility.

  • (1) Approved program for Certified Tumor Registrar Credential; or (2) Associate's degree; or (3) Bachelor's degree.

Pay Range

$25.25 - $36.61 /hour
